Pope AAF Combat Control Tower

Location: Pope Army Airfield

Architect: GreenHorne & Omara

The facility is a 5-story, 4500 square foot tower constructed of galvanized steel columns and beams being supported on cast-in-place concrete spread footings.  The elevated floor decks are wood and there is a standing seam metal roof pitched to the north with gutters and downspouts covering the entire structure.  A 45-foot wide by 40-foot tall shotcrete wall with features is located on the south face of the tower.

UH-60 and MH-47 helicopter mock-ups are supported using cantilevered steel on the east and west ends of the tower.  Rappel platforms are located at levels 1, 2, and 3.  The open bay interior of the structure contains 6 parachute rigging hoists supported by the steel above.  A continuous fixed rappel station is located on the top level and belay anchor points were located at grade around the tower.
